Happy Belated Mother’s day to all our superhero mothers around the world (particularly from the African and European continents). We love and appreciate you!
I was watching the 50th NAACP Image awards this past weekend and was particularly impressed by the many words of appreciation the different artists had to shower on their respective mothers. The NAACP Image awards was created by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) to celebrate the artistry and work of African – American artists during the civil rights movement era. It is an annual award ceremony synonymous with more mainstream award ceremonies such as the Academy awards (aka Oscars). This year marks the 50th year this awards ceremony has been around and I was excited to have watched a few clips from the ceremony. The host for this year was Black-ish actor Anthony Anderson. He led the wave of what I call the ‘mom appreciation’ by inviting his mother on stage to receive the award with him and allowing her to say a few words. In his own words:
“I stand before you as an actor because of my mother, because of the love and the support she gave me as a single mother growing in Watts (Compton, California) who had a dream of becoming an actor herself and she put that dream on hold to raise an actor, so everything I do on screen is for you mama, so I want to dedicate this to you.”

Aww, isn’t that just the sweetest!
Next on the list was Shawn Carter also known as Jay-Z. His speech for winning the prestigious President’s Award was ripe with praise for all the women in his life including his 93 year old grandmother, Hattie White.
” …I would like to dedicate this award to those beautiful women. I would like to dedicate this award to beautiful women in my life…” (his grandmother, Hattie White, his mother Gloria Carter and his wife Beyonce Knowles-Carter).

Mothers make the world go Round!
We may be familiar with the term ‘money makes the world go round‘. However, as we can see these superstars and wealthy men clearly show that in fact, it is ‘Mothers that Make the World go Round.’ Without our mothers we wouldn’t be where we are, without their constant nurturing and encouragement we won’t be the human beings and adults we are becoming. So cheers to our awesome mothers!
We love you, we appreciate you and May God continue to bless you for us!
